There are certain things I believe one should do before bestowing a title to themselves. Like actually buying a bike before calling yourself a "cyclist", or owning sock em' boppers before calling yourself "a child of 90's", because using these titles without the proper experience to go them either makes you look like an idiot, or deprived of the satisfaction that is punching your little brother in the face with inflated plastic. Sonic 2 is one of those games I feel everyone should at least try out before calling themselves an "avid gamer". Well, that just about spoils my final opinion but if you'd like to read more I suppose I could spare the time
Sonic 2 is the insanely successful successor to Sonic the hedgehog (try saying that 3 times fast with a lisp) that brings back all the Sonic action you loved in the first game, only this time "going to plaid" is a bit easier with the super-sonic spin dash o' death now at our disposal, and this time we've got the fantastic Mr. Fox butt monkey sidekick to do all the work in the boss fights. Another addition is that special stages actually mean something, because upon completing the 7 special stages that should each die in their own individually lit and kindled fires, you get to break the game even more as Super Sonic. Though, Super Sonic is a bit unwieldy in this game because you don't really get to choose when to use him, upon collecting 50 rings and jumping (and believe me, you're going to have to jump sometime) he automatically goes into super mode. I suppose this can be convenient if you feel like breaking the game 90% of the time, and the unholy trinity in Metropolis zone make sure your ring count doesn't get that high, so that's helpful, right?
There's a bit of plot this time around, Robotnik has decided to build his own space station, and after a bit of litigation with Lucas films he has it set for launch and it's up to us to stop him for some reason. I mean if he wants to go to space, who are we to stop him? It's not like we saw some giant death "lay-zer" pointed directly at earth so I'm not 100% sure what the treat is. But on the way to stopping him for not quite clear reasons, we have to traverse various levels, namely; Totally not green hill zone, pink lemonade factory, the "it could be a water level but it doesn't have to be"
level, the level that started your compulsive gambling, totally not green hill zone re-color, inspector gadget music level, BP zone, SLICERS!!!, lull plane zone, slightly better lull plane zone, aaaannd Death Egg zone
I can't think of one for a hallway with two bosses and no rings, sue me.
Since we're well aware of the Sonic formula by now I'll just be giving a mini rundown of each of the levels like I did with the last game. So let's get started. Emerald hill zone is just your typical island themed first Sonic level, only it's quite obvious they'd like for you to break the game as soon as you can with this level sporting 7 special stages making it possible to get Super Sonic in the first level. The design is nice, the level theme is memorable but the boss fight is pathetic. Chemical plant zone most remembered for its rising water section in the 2nd act, this level has a surprising amount of shortcuts and different paths that you can take. (I'm going to be brief about this level for now seeing as I'll be getting around to Generations one of these days) Aquatic Ruin, this is by far my favorite water level in the entire series. Your occupation in the water is based completely on your skill, you can avoid the water in both acts if you're good enough and know the best paths, being a person who hates most water sections, this level's okay in my book.
Casino Night zone, do me a favor; go listen to Duke Ellington's "Taking the A train" and try playing this level without being reminded of that song. That basically sums up my thoughts on that level, so I'll move on to Hill Top zone. As far as theme, well
I'm not quite sure what to make of this level. It's a lava level, in the sky
yeah. This level for me comes off as a big, "meh". It's an obvious recolor of Emerald Hill zone, and aside from the rising lava section there's not too much that's memorable about the level in my opinion, but it's short so it's just a minor inconvenience before we go to Mystic Cave zone. Okay another favor; now listen to the Inspector gadget theme and play the first 4 seconds of this level's theme. This is where the difficulty picks up in the game and gets somewhat challenging. Though as a side note, I've never really seen this sort of level style again in a Sonic game. I mean yeah, there have been other cave levels, but those tend to dwell more on the rockiness, or crystals. There aren't any other levels that come to mind like this one, but this level stands out to me for that reason. Definitely my favorite level in the game, too bad it's so short.
Oil Ocean zone, home to the mega Sonic glitch and those stupid seahorses who like off screening you. Metropolis zone, the only 3 act level sporting the aforementioned "unholy trinity"; Shell crackers, Slicers and Asterons and their horrendous placement. Sky chase zone:* zzzzzzzzzzzzzz*. Wing fortress zone besides the constantly looming treat of falling to your death this level is quite fun and expansive. Even though the level is short there are still areas of the level I'm only now finding. And finally we have Death Egg zone which is like I said, a hallway with two bosses Silver Metal Sonic, and the Death Egg robot- and no rings. This level can be a bit tricky if you don't know the bosses patterns, and having no rings turns any little mistake you make into an instant death.
The overall game is fun my only real issue is the badnik placement later on in the game, Metropolis zone being the biggest offender. That's this game's only real problem, in just about every other area it's a step up from the previous game, and the first game was amazing. The environments are great, the music is very memorable, and the added gimmicks of the speed boosters among other things keeps the game play fun and inventive. Like I've said before, if you haven't for some reason played Sonic 2, at least give it a go
